The Neapolitan Mastiff is a very large dog weighing from 120 to 200 lbs.They drool,snore,and have an alpha personality.The Neapolitan Mastiff is unlike any other breed, there is much variation between types. Each breeder breeds what their ideal is, so in a way the Neo is like a work of art. Reflecting its breeders ideal!!! Neapolitan Mastiffs do better in indoor homes.They can handle the cold better then they can handle the heat.Because of their large size they may not be suitable for homes with children under 10.The Mastino also can have several health conditions.Such as hip dysplasia,heart related conditions,cherry eye and skin allergies etc.This is a good link about Mastini and health http://www.neapolitanworld.com/health.htm .We have a great Health Issues Forum Please Check It Out!!! Tips when searching for a Neapolitan Mastiff.Make sure you get pictures and pedigrees of the parent dogs.So many times first time buyers fall prey to cheaper dogs,who in turn grow up to have features unlike the Mastino they dreamed of. No wrinkles,mass or size.Don't let this happen to you.Do your homework.Beware of breeders asking for non-refundable deposits on dogs that are not even born yet! I would not even pay a deposit before the pups are at least 4 weeks of age.We do not even except deposits until they are 4 to 6 weeks of age here,but will let you reserve the pups verbally until then.Tawny & Mahogany is not a rare color. You get the color you breed for. Some breeders breed these colors to say rare, they are usually puppy millers, and back yard breeders.Beware of breeders who sound uneducated, or do not know why or what they hoped to get from the breeding.If they do not know or understand the bloodlines stay away! Beware of breeders too willing to down other breeders. They usually have the most to hide! It is best if you can arrange a few days to go pick your puppy up and visit the breeders personally.Then you can see if their dogs are happy, clean,and well cared for. Don't support breeders who are in it for the wrong reasons. If enough people quit buying pups from them they will have to quit doing it. If you are importing a dog make sure you get plenty of pictures of the pup before you buy it.And when it gets here make sure it is the puppy you agreed to buy! Some of the overseas breeders are known for sticking papers to pups from petstores with their sire and dam as the parents,then the pup never turns out to look like other dogs from that kennel.If it seems to good to be true,it probably is.
Don't fall prey to registries that have no meaning. This breed is not for the inexperienced dog owner.The Mastino will test you, and its boundaries.This is not a breed to try and make mean.It has been bred for a guard dog for thousands of years,it's naturally protective.If you socialize and train it well and give it the love and kindness it deserves,it will return your love ten fold.This is not a breed to be tied out and forgot about.They strive for their owners love and attention like no other breed I know.So please be as loving to him as he will be to you!
